devils Golf Course Death Valley

On the road to Death Valley on the rim of the valley before descending there is a region of grey and black mounds. The mounds come before reaching the town of Shoshone where the last motel before entering the park sits.

The room has a Raven on the door. It is on the south eastern rim of the park. It appears to be the only motel within 50 miles although there is a health spa in Tecopa which may have rooms. The exterior looks like a shed in advanced stages of decay.

The next morning around 6 the sun is coming over the eastern mountains. The moon is hanging over the western mountains. Inside Death Valley the shadows still cover most of the basin floor.

There are no other tourists on the road. For two hours. Early April is spring vacation for many school children and college students. Furnace Creek is the visitor center for the park and the location of the golf course, restaurants and hotels. The park is packed. Solid tourists. Mid summer temperatures reach 120 degrees fahrenheit. Spring temperatures are in the 80's.

The animation for devilsGolfCourse consists of a golfer swinging his club while wearing knickers. Knickers are traditional golfing attire and often paired with argyle knee socks. The animation is projected onto the inside of a white umbrella. The site chosen for the projection was one of a number of salt flats in Death Valley National Park. The mountain shadows created by the morning sun cover the salt flats. It is possible to see the video projection through the white umbrella fabric. The specific area called "the devils golf course" is an area of highly agitated, churned up halite salt crystals. It is what is left over from the evaporation of Lake Manly.
