The gun battery, Battery Harris is located in Fort Tilden, Queens. The concrete casement for the battery was built in 1941-42.
The casement protected the 16" 170 ton gun from aerial attack and also limited the range of the gun so it could not be turned
around and fired on New York City in case of enemy infiltration. Today Fort Tilden sits between two beaches in Queens,
Breezy Point and Riis Park. Walking along Riis Park beach there are trails which wind through dense shrubbery
over grassy covered sand hills which hide the bunker until it appears under its brushy canopy. The animation projected
from the Qumi Pocket Projector consists of five segments sampled from the Military History channel.
The Korean War. Vietnam War. Grenada Engagement, Iraq War I, Afghanistan War. Each selection isolates the
soldier or soldiers against a solid color background. These wars have created a continuum from World War II
to the present in which the US has been involved in some kind of military engagement. The concrete
casement walls have become perfect canvases for teenage graffiti. The graffiti is the residue from this spraying.
Tagging. Marking. Trace. No trace. The video projection marks without a making a mark.
This documentation is the only residue. A video animation was projected and recorded. No trace.
