national Capitol Columns











the columns were originally built as part of the portico of the Capitol in 1828



quarried from sandstone near Aquia Creek in Virginia

columns installed in 1828 before dome completed in 1866

columns appeared to be inadequate to support iron dome which was larger than original design

a new addition to the east side of the Capitol was constructed in 1958 to correct the visual illusion

the original columns were removed

in the 1980's the columns were transported to the Arboretum and set on a foundation of stone

a reflecting pool is fed by a a rivulet of water running down a channel from the platform

two columns are not standing leaving twenty-two upright

the other two lay broken in the weeds
